An Antibiotic with Fungicidal and Insecticidal Activity produced by Streptomyces

Abstract: The methods employed for a, b and c have been described 2 , 3 • In the case of d, three groups each of six animals were taken; two received 100 and 400 mmgm./kgm., r espectively, by intraperitoneal injection ; the third group was the control. The animals were killed at intervals for examination. The main results may be summarized as follows. (1) Progressive fall in mitotic index. This was observed even with very low concentrations (5 mmgm./kgm.) in the chick embryo tissues, but the onion root was less sensitiv… Show more

“…A set of different molecules from Streptomyces spp. that act against insect pests have been found and characterized; these are, for instance, flavensomycin [ 194 ], antimycin A [ 195 ], piericidins [ 196 ], macrotetralides [ 197 ] and prasinons [ 198 ]. Streptomyces avermitilis , a common soil inhabitant, was shown to produce avermectins, molecules with potent activity against arthropods and nematodes [ 199 ].…”

“…Other species and strains in this genus produce a variety of metabolites acting as potent toxins against either phytopathogenic microbials or insect pests [ 60 ]. Among the first discovered insecticidal substances produced by Streptomyces species are flavensomycin [ 61 ], antimycin A [ 62 ], piericidins [ 63 ], macrotetralides [ 64 ] and prasinons [ 65 ]. Later on, the insecticidal and anthelmintic activities of avermectins produced by the soil Actinomycete Streptomyces avermitilis MS & Dwas, were discovered [ 66 ].…”

“…Flavensomycin was first isolated from a culture of Streptomyces tanaschiensis by CRAVERI and GIOLITTI (1957) and later from a culture of 5. griseus (CHACKO and GoTTLIEB, 1965 (CRAVER! and GIOLITTI, 1957;CRAVER!…”
