An appraisal of laboratory models of androgenetic alopecia: A systematic review

Abstract: Background: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of non-scarring alopecia in humans. Several studies have used different laboratory models to study the pathogenesis and interventions for AGA. These study models have proved beneficial and have led to the approval of two drugs. However, the need to build on existing knowledge remains by examining the relevance of study models to the disease. Objective: We sought to appraise laboratory or pre-clinical models of AGA. Method: We searched through data… Show more

“…Skin organoids have provided valuable in vitro models for studying wound healing, allowing researchers to investigate biophysical and biochemical cues without the need for costly and time-consuming animal studies. These mechanistic studies offer advantages that will greatly contribute to the clinical translation of organoids [ 128 ]. Importantly, these skin organoids are capable of releasing bioactive substances related to wound healing in a controlled manner and can recreate the intricate cell–cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions of stem/progenitor cells.…”

“…Established cell lines, by contrast, display more advantages, such as being cost effective, easy to use, and providing an unlimited supply of material. [80,81] When using cells as biomaterials in the biomedicine field, the source of cells, conditions of culture, preservation, transportation, and mode of administration must all be considered, which may influence their function and performance.
