An Approach to Solving Technical Difficulties Facing Non-CS Students in a Database Class

Abstract: Abstract-Today, an organization's biggest asset is its data. Knowledge of relational databases and SQL (Structured Query Language) is one of the most valued technical skills and in high demand in most organizations. Students of any major can benefit in their careers from learning these fundamental database concepts. At our school, database classes for both CS (Computer Science) and non-CS students are offered by our computer science faculty members. Teaching database concepts can be challenging especially to n… Show more

“…When we focus on design, we find that functional dependence, automatic tools and the application of normal forms are important. These features are the main factors that make a database design difficult and require specialization, so much so that specialization can be considered a valuable talent and what most organizations need (Suranauwarat, 2017). While some work has been done to automate the database design process, a fully automated method has not yet been proposed.…”

“…Some of them are integrity, creating relationships, providing logical and physical independence, guaranteed consistency and accuracy, and retrieving data using queries easily and conveniently (Kraleva et al, 2018). However, designing the right database is a challenging task whether a raw dataset is available or not (Delplanque et al, 2018;Suranauwarat, 2017).…”

“…The educational management literature is beginning to indicate that attitudes towards ICT are shifting, and often significantly, which is likely to have a major impact upon ICT and school management. The importance of communication systems for education is being highlighted within the literature increasingly [10][11][12][13][14][15], but the personnel effects of this outcome are not yet being studied to any great extent [5], and it would appear to be difficult to find case study examples from which to extrapolate at this present time. Messages arising from the general management and management of change literature appear to be relevant and pertinent within the educational, and ICT and management, areas, but there are a number of key access learning materials; to interact with the content, instructor, and other learners; and to obtain support during the learning process, in order to acquire knowledge, to construct personal meaning, and to grow from the learning experience";…”

“…The study of Suranauwarat [14] investigated the difficulties of non-Computer Science (CS) students who were taking up databases courses. The researcher disclosed that the non-CS students had difficulties in the hardware and software aspects of learning database management systems.…”
