An assessment of antioxidant status in patients with carbon monoxide poisoning

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Carbon monoxide poisoning (COP) is an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. This study was to investigate the levels of serum paraoxonase (PON), arylesterase (ARYL), ceruloplasmin (Cp), and sulfhydryl (-SH) in the treatment of COP, and to further understand the pathophysiology of COP. METHODS: This prospective study comprised 107 individuals with COP (group 1) and 50 healthy volunteers (group 2). Serum, plasma, and erythrocyte samples were taken on admission from all participants wi… Show more

“…In the study of Zengin et al in order to examine CO intoxication antioxidant levels as compared to the study group with a healthy control group. 18 These researchers have detected that TAR, PON, ARES and thiol results decreased, that is to say, antioxidant condition decreased in patients with CO intoxication. In our study, native and total thiol levels which were indicators of antioxidants, decreased, disulphide which was an indicator of oxidation increased.…”

“…[ 1 ] ACOP can also lead to delayed encephalopathy after ACOP (DEACMP). [ 2 , 3 ] Coma duration is one of the objective predictors of poor prognosis in emergency patients with ACOP. Therefore, evaluating the degree of consciousness impairment in patients with ACOP, especially the duration, is crucial to understand the patient's condition, prevent related complications, and evaluate patients’ prognosis.…”

“…The formation of carboxyhemoglobin reduces the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity, causing tissue hypoxia and leading to ischemic stroke [1] . ACOP can also lead to delayed encephalopathy after ACOP (DEACMP) [2,3] . Coma duration is one of the objective predictors of poor prognosis in emergency patients with ACOP.…”

“…Lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) is an important marker of OS formed from unsaturated phospholipids, glycolipids and cholesterol. Ceruloplasmin (Cp) is an acute-phase plasma protein with antioxidant property (11). On account of the complex formation with ferroportin I, the membrane-bound Cp found in astrocytes participates in regulation of iron levels in the prevention of free radical reactions (12).…”
