An Assessment of Gastric Emptying by Breathalyser

Abstract: A breathalyser has been used to measure blood alcohol levels at short intervals to produce an absorption curve which we have shown is reproducible. Changes in the rate of absorption which reflect changes in gastric emptying times produced by metoclopromide and propantheline have been demonstrated. The breathalyser technique described appears to offer a simple method of studying the effects of drugs on the rate of gastric emptying.

“…This appears to be reproducible, mean time to peak being 20.71 min in both placebo studies (Table 1). This is more rapid than in other reported studies (Finch et al, 1974). It may reflect the effect of a warm fluid (Bateman et al, 1977) or the low dose of ethanol used.…”

“…In addition, the effect of the drug on gastric emptying is not apparent under some test conditions in normals (Ramsbottom & Hunt, 1970) but clear in others (Kreel et al, 1972). The measurement of drug (Heading, Nimmo, Prescott & Tothill, 1973) or ethanol (Finch, Kendall & Mitchard, 1974;Gibbons & Lant, 1975) absorption is an index of gastric emptying rate. We have used ethanol absorption as a method of measuring gastric emptying.…”

“…This is a convincing demonstration of the dependence of drug absorption on stomach emptying. In none of the previous studies relating drug absorption and gastric emptying (Heading et al, 1973;Nimmo et al, 1973;Finch et al, 1974) has such a relationship been established on the basis of simultaneous measurements.…”

“…The present findings have wide therapeutic implications. There is an increasing awareness of the role of gastric emptying rate in influencing the absorption of orally administered drugs (Heading et al, 1973;Nimmo et al, 1973;Finch, Kendall & Mitchard, 1974;Volans, 1974;Ahmad, 1974).…”

“…The influence of gastric retention and intestinal motility on drug absorption has been investigated by Nimmo (6) and others (7,8). Metoclopramide (Maxolon®, Beecham) has been shown to decrease gastric retention and increase intestinal motility (9), and this results in an increased rate of absorption of a number of drugs.…”
