An Automated Iridium-Strip Heater for LA-ICP-MS Bulk Analysis of Geological Samples

Abstract: published in the GeoReM database for reference materials of geological and environmental interest. To demonstrate routine bulk LA-ICP-MS analyses of geochemical and cosmochemical samples using the whole rock fusion technique, we also present trace element data for ocean island basalts from Lanai (Hawaii) and of Martian meteorites.

“…Forty-nine analyses of eight digestions of BHVO-2 over a 3-year time period yielded an average of 192 ppb and a 1r RSD of 2.3%, demonstrating the quality of data that can be obtained with our method. This value is identical within error to the LA-ICP-MS data (190 ppb) obtained by Stoll et al (2008) on directly fused BHVO-2. These authors also determined a W concentration of 240 ppb in directly fused W-2.…”

“…In general, RSD for the averaged element concentrations of the fused glasses are <5%. The volatile elements Cs and Pb are not reported since fusion temperatures of 1600 • C during glass compound preparation can cause significant loss by volatilization depending on the time of fusion (Stoll et al, 2008). Thus, concentrations of these two specific elements measured on glass compounds represent minimum concentrations.…”

“…The element concentrations measured on BHVO-2G agree within <7% with preferred values. The glasses of the 13 samples fused by the iridium-strip heater can be regarded as homogeneous (Stoll et al, 2008) and the measured values can be considered to be of similar accuracy. The RSE of an individual spot-analysis on the glasses was <3.7% for the ion intensities.…”

“…The lack of matrix-matched calibration standards is recognized to be the biggest hindrance in the analysis of multielements by LA-ICP-MS (Durrant and Ward, 2005;Miliszkiewicz et al, 2015). Reference materials preparation techniques including (1) pressed-powder pellets with (Jarvis and Williams, 1993;O'Connor et al, 2007) and without (Arroyo et al, 2009;Garbe-Sch€ onberg and Müller, 2014) binders; (2) fused glasses with (Becker and Dietze, 1999;Eggins, 2003;Perkins et al, 1993) and without flux agent (Fedorowich et al, 1993;He et al, 2016;Jochum et al, 2000;Kurosawa et al, 2006;Nehring et al, 2008;Norman et al, 1996;Reid et al, 1999;Stoll et al, 2008;Zhu et al, 2013). Solution-based calibration method (Becker, 2002;Dressler et al, 2010;Günther et al, 1997;Kovacs et al, 2009;Leach et al, 1999;Thompson et al, 1989;Yang et al, 2010) can be applied in the absence of suitable solid reference materials.…”
