An early collision warning algorithm for vehicles based on V2V communication

Abstract: The WAVE (IEEE 1609) standard and vehicular technology create a new opportunity for telematics service. Safety is one of the top issues of telematics service. In this paper, we propose a proactive safety method that can alert drivers before the accident occurs using WAVE. An algorithm named Early Collision Warning Algorithm (ECWA) was proposed in this paper. In ECWA, vehicles broadcast Relationship Information (RI) to neighboring vehicles periodically. Each vehicle calculates whether potential collisions may h… Show more

“…Multi-hop broadcast in VANET mainly supports two types of broadcast applications. One type is safety applications such as Collective Collision Avoidance (CCA) where in the event of an emergency an alert message is propagated as quickly as possible into oncoming traffic [13]. Broadcast protocols for these applications are usually designed to propagate messages in one or two directions with high reliability and minimum latency.…”

“…In the literature, Time To Collision (TTC) has been adopted as a commonly used metric for predicting a collision, whether by using V2V communication [7] and [6] or other sensors such as radar or camera [4]. One thing common to this research is the use of a sensor to estimate the location, speed and sometimes heading of nearby vehicles, and form an estimate the TTC using a vehicle motion model.…”

“…The main components of the UMTS network are radio network controller, BST, serving general packet radio service (GPRS) support node (SGSN), and gateway GPRS support node (GGSN) . By contrast, VANET is used for short‐range but high‐speed communication from vehicle to vehicle and from vehicles to the infrastructure (V2I) .…”
