“…Apart from circulating EBV-encoded miRNAs, other virus including Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), BK virus (BKV), Polyomavirus JC (JCPyV), and Papillomaviruses (PVs) derived miRNAs in blood circulation were also found to be a hopeful approach for the exploitation of disease markers [6,10,[19][20][21][22]. Recently, Chen and colleagues reported that several miRNA-like RNA fragments can be predicted in Ebola virus genome and they successfully confirmed the existence of miR-VP-3p in the serum samples of patients with Ebola virus disease (EVD), moreover, monitoring the levels of serum miR-VP-3p may use as an early indicator of EVD [23]. Collectively, these observations point out a novel vision for the use of viral encoded miR-NAs as minimal-invasive markers for diagnosing, outcome evaluation, and therapeutic effectiveness assessment of virus associated diseases.…”

“…In addition, v-miRNAs were also considered as biomarkers in many virally infected diseases. miR-VP-3p was found to be present in the sera of EBOV-infected patients but not in healthy controls, and this v-miRNA was detectable in the serum prior to the detection of viral genomic RNA, indicating that miR-VP-3p may serve as a biomarker for early diagnosis of EBOV (114). HCMV-encoded miR-US4-1 serves as a biomarker for IFNα treatment potency in the serum of hepatitis B patients (135).…”

“…Ebola virus (EBOV) is a negative-sense RNA virus that causes severe infectious disease with a high mortality rate of 83-90%. To date, few studies have identified miRNA-like small RNA encoded by EBOV (114)(115)(116)(117). The first report was by Liang et al, who predicted that three mature miRNAs (EBOV-miR-1-5p,-3p, and miR-2-3p) are formed from two pre-miRNAs (EBOV-pre-miR-1 and EBOV-pre-miR-2) using the host cellular machinery.…”

“…Hence, for the early diagnosis of disease, the role of noninvasive circulating miRNA has come into the picture as a biomarker. In the year 2016, Chen et al () conducted the observational study to prove whether the miRNA‐like fragments, miR‐VP‐3p, serve as a potential biomarker for the primeval detection of Ebola virus infection or not. For this, they compared the Ebola virus‐positive patients with the negative ones and observed the elevated level of miR‐VP‐3p in the Ebola‐positive patients which was not detectable in the Ebola negative patients.…”
