An Economical, Green Pathway to Biaryls: Palladium Nanoparticles Catalyzed Ullmann Reaction in Ionic Liquid/ Supercritical Carbon Dioxide System

Abstract: In this paper, an economical, green pathway involving the palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) catalyzed reductive Ullmann reaction of an aryl chloride to afford a biaryl with high conversion and selectivity in an ionic liquid (IL)/supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO 2 ) system was developed. The combination of IL and ScCO 2 provides superior advantages in product separation, catalyst recycling and reuse of reaction media over traditional organic solvents. Further investigations showed that the Brønsted-acidic imid… Show more

“…Using thermoregulated ILs, a good recyclability of the nanocatalysts by simple phase separation can be achieved, while the catalytic process is driven under monophasic conditions [53,54]. Herein, catalytic active carbonyl species are formed under reaction conditions [53,171,176]. The chemoselectivity and activity are strongly influenced by nanoparticles size.…”

“…Currently, metal NPs immobilized in ILs have been successfully employed in a wide range of catalytic reactions, including hydrogenation [5][6][7][8][9], oxidation [10,11], coupling [12][13][14][15][16] and others [17][18][19][20][21]. Nevertheless, these NP catalysts encounter many challenges.…”
