Despite persistent effort, many web pages are still not acces sible to everyone. Fixing web accessibility problems can be complicated. Developers need to have extensive knowledge not only of possible accessibility problems but also of appro aches for fixing them. This paper is about using the large number of accessibility issues on real websites and crowdsourced fixes for them as a unique source of learning materi als for web developers to learn how to build accessible com ponents in a cost-efficient manner. In this paper, we present the design, development and study of CAN (Composable Accessibility Infrastructure), a crowdsourcing infrastructure that collects web accessibility issues and their fixes, dynami cally composes solutions on-the-fly, and delivers the crowdsourced content as teaching materials. Our unique CAN user interaction and system design enables end users with disabilities to both benefit from and contribute to the sys tem without additional effort in their daily web browsing, and allows web developers to experience real accessibility issues and initiate a learning process with first-hand materi als. CAN also provides an opportunity for data-driven dis covery of the common implementation practices that cause accessibility issues. We show how CAN addresses a set of accessibility issues on the top 100 popular websites. We also present our user study results where web developers who had varying knowledge of web accessibility all found our system an effective and interesting platform to learning web acces sibility.

The Accessibility Evaluation Assistant (AEA) is a web accessibility knowledge management tool designed specifically to assist novice auditors in conducting an accessibility evaluation. The software incorporates a bespoke structured walkthrough approach designed to guide the auditor through a series of checks based on established accessibility principles with the goal of identifying accessibility barriers. A previous trial examined the effectiveness of the AEA and explored the pedagogical potential of the tool when incorporated into the undergraduate computing curriculum. The results of the evaluations carried out by the novices yielded promising levels of validity and reliability. This paper presents the results of a second experiment designed to test the overall efficacy of the AEA when compared to a WCAG 2.0 conformance review. The results of evaluations produced using both AEA and Conformance Review methods were examined and comparisons made of quality factors such as effectiveness, reliability, efficiency and usefulness. Quantitative and qualitative data from the experiment support continued use of the AEA in an educational context, highlighting the benefits compared to WCAG 2.0 and gives further insight into the complex nature of developing accessibility evaluation skills in novices.

The accessibility of the websites is important to ensure the full access of relevant information to people with disabilities. Website evolution impacts the website accessibility, as the amount of accessibility faults in websites tend to increase during this phase. Normally, the accessibility evaluation is done before deployment but there is a lack of accessibility maintenance after evolution. Although legislation has been established for government websites, updates are not always conducted. This paper hypothesizes that adopting a continuous validation process of website accessibility could facilitate accessibility maintenance after each evolution. For this end, a tool was adapted to support developers on finding and fixing the accessibility faults. We invited governmental websites managers to participate on our evaluation procedure that was based on failures report by email, questionnaire and direct contact, to make them aware of the regulation and the faults found in the websites under their responsibility. Even after our contact and constant messages sent by email suggesting how to fix the faults the adhesion was low. The results suggested a notable lack of interest towards the regulation compliance and a strong lack of sensitivity towards people's disabilities.
