An Efficient Hardware Architecture for Multimedia Encryption and Authentication Using the Discrete Wavelet Transform

Abstract: Abstract-This paper introduces a zero-overhead encryption and authentication scheme for real-time embedded multimedia systems. The parameterized construction of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) compression block is used to introduce a free parameter in the design. It allows building a keyspace for lightweight multimedia encryption. The parameterization yields rational coefficients leading to an efficient fixed point hardware implementation. A clock speed of over 240 MHz was achieved on a Xilinx Virtex 5 FP… Show more

“…Thus, a hard-wired LUT implementation will give considerable improvements in clock frequency over the present value of 103 MHz. It is noteworthy that together with [5], this is the first known hardware implementation of the parameterized DWT filter (to the best of knowledge of the authors). Thus, comparison with reported architecture only indicates the trade offs involved in building a secure DWT scheme.…”

“…The novel parameterization of DWT was first presented in [5]. The above discussion on rotation of subbands allows us to improve the performance of our parameterized DWT scheme by using simple transformations such as transposing the matrix, reverse-ordering of the subbands along the rows and columns.…”

“…Some of the challenges in multimedia systems are difficulty in accessing heterogeneous data, and its coherent and contextual presentation; crucial dependence of system performance on natural language annotations which affects knowledge coverage; inadequacy of manual annotation and issue of scaling it to web (or large repository of knowledge), need of higher processing power to provide real-time response, etc. In today's world, multimedia systems are being employed in several applications (Pande and Zambreno, 2009) such as entertainment (mobile phones, internet video websites), defence (video-surveillance and tracking) and public-domain (telemedicine, remote and distant learning, traffic monitoring and management) and several researchers are working to provide real-time support for such applications (Pande and Zambreno, 2008a;Sliwko and Nguyen, 2007). Multimedia information retrieval in these areas, (such as internet) will increasingly gain popularity.…”
