An electromagnetic helical undulator for polarized x-rays

Abstract: Abstract. Linearly and circularly polarized x-rays have been very successfully applied to the study of the properties of materials. Many applications can benefit from the availability of energy-tunable, high-brilliance x-ray beams with adjustable polarization properties. A helical undulator that can generate beams of variable (linear to circular) polarization has been designed and built by the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics and the Advanced Photon Source. The first harmonic of this 12.8-cm-period device w… Show more

“…Polarization switching is achieved via a reversal of polarity of one set of coils. Such devices have been built at several places, e.g., PSI (Schmidt et al 2001), ELETTRA , APS (Gluskin et al 2000;Jaski et al 2013a,b), and SOLEIL (Batrakov et al 2007;Marcouille et al 2007). In other designs, one field component is generated from permanent magnets to push the fields further, particularly for shorter-period devices, and the other field component is produced with coils to permit a fast switching (Chavanne et al 1998a;Rogalev et al 1999;Marteau et al 2011).…”

“…The 4-ID branch of the APS has two undulators working in parallel, one which provide low energy X-rays (0.5 keV up to 3 keV) feeding the 4-ID-C soft rays branch and other that provides high energy (3 -100 keV), feeding the 4-ID-D branch. Details on each one of these undulators can be found in [68] and [69]. We focus on the high energy branch More details on the information provided on this paragraph can be found in [70].…”

“…For example, a skew quadrupole introduces a coupling between horizontal and vertical motion of the particles in the beam, and a skew octupole leads to a reduction of beam lifetime. [2,3]. This device, outfitted with a skew-quadrupole correction lens and a skew-octupole correction lens, is now in operation in the APS storage ring.…”
