This article describes how semantic role resources can be exploited for preposition disambiguation. The main resources include the semantic role annotations provided by the Penn Treebank and FrameNet tagged corpora. The resources also include the assertions contained in the Factotum knowledge base, as well as information from Cyc and Conceptual Graphs. A common inventory is derived from these in support of definition analysis, which is the motivation for this work. The disambiguation concentrates on relations indicated by prepositional phrases, and is framed as word-sense disambiguation for the preposition in question. A new type of feature for word-sense disambiguation is introduced, using WordNet hypernyms as collocations rather than just words. Various experiments over the Penn Treebank and FrameNet data are presented, including prepositions classified separately versus together, and illustrating the effects of filtering. Similar experimentation is done over the Factotum data, including a method for inferring likely preposition usage from corpora, as knowledge bases do not generally indicate how relationships are expressed in English (in contrast to the explicit annotations on this in the Penn Treebank and FrameNet). Other experiments are included with the FrameNet data mapped into the common relation inventory developed for definition analysis, illustrating how preposition disambiguation might be applied in lexical acquisition.

Work in computational linguistics began very soon after the development of the first computers (Booth, Brandwood and Cleave 1958), yet in the intervening four decades there has been a pervasive feeling that progress in computer understanding of natural language has not been commensurate with progress in other computer applications. Recently, a number of prominent researchers in natural language processing met to assess the state of the discipline and discuss future directions (Bates and Weischedel 1993). The consensus of this meeting was that increased attention to large amounts of lexical and domain knowledge was essential for significant progress, and current research efforts in the field reflect this point of view.

A természetesnyelv-feldolgozás az emberi nyelv feldolgozása számítógép segítségével, ami egy széles terület, sok mindent átfog a beszédfeldolgozástól kezdve a szemantikáig. Az információkinyerés a természetesnyelv-feldolgozás egy fontos területe. Strukturálatlan, vagy félig strukturált dokumentumokból gyűjt ki információkat, amiket strukturált formában tárol el. Az eseménykinyerés az információkinyerés egy fontos részfeladata, célja strukturált információ kinyerése olyan eseményekkel kapcsolatban, amelyek strukturálatlan dokumentumokban találhatóak. Az események detektálásának a feladata az esemény-előfordulások azonosítása a szövegekben. A gyakori többértelműség miatt nem elég a szóalak vizsgálata, a szövegkörnyezetet is elemezni kell. A szövegekben a legtöbb esemény igékhez kapcsolódik, és az igék általában eseményeket jelölnek. Az igéken kívül lehetnek események más szófajú szavak is pl. főnevek, igenevek stb. Az események detektálása mellett egy másik fontos feladat a megtalált események szerepeinek meghatározása, a szemantikus szerepek címkézése. Ez a természetesnyelv-feldolgozás azon feladata, ami detektálja egy mondat predikátumának szemantikus argumentumait és osztályozza ezeket speciális szerepek szerint. Ez a disszertáció a természetes nyelven kifejezett események számítógépes feldolgozásával foglalkozik. Ezen belül az események detektálásával, osztályozásával, valamint az események szereplőinek azonosításával.
