An Evaluation of a "Time Tunnel" Display Format for the Presentation of Temporal Information

Abstract: The time tunnel display design technique combines the benefits of configural displays (salient visual properties corresponding to critical domain semantics) with the benefits of temporal information (i.e., the value of variables and properties over time). In Experiment 1 a baseline configural display and a time tunnel display were evaluated using real-time measures of system control, fault detection, and state estimation in a simulated process control task. The results provided little evidence in support of th… Show more

“…This suggest that status displays are considered to be an essential basic support facility, indispensable for effective system operation since they provides up-to-date information about the current system state on a permanent basis (Norman, 2002;Ulich, 1986). Although some form of status display is a sine qua non for the operation of any device, the choice of information to display is problematic where there are multiple interacting variables (Bennett et al, 2005). Here the situation may seem to be straightforward, with only two key parameters (cost and comfort).…”

“…The primary purpose of this display is to provide a detailed description of how system events (protocols, crashes, alerts, logins) have transpired over the course of time (and how they have transpired relative to each other). The display is scaled using the laws of perspective geometry (i.e., a vanishing point towards the left), a variation of the time tunnel design technique (e.g., Bennett, Payne, & Walters, 2005). The display is divided in two by the horizontal origin axis in the middle of the display.…”

“…The analysis of temporal relations is not an explicit part of EID, and WDA does not readily capture temporal relations. Capturing temporal relations visually has not been a key concern of EID (but see Bennett, Payne & Walters, 2005;Hansen, 1995). However, understanding temporal relations is important when mapping the dynamic properties of a process into the temporal properties of auditory displays.…”
