Green Eco-Driving Effects in Non-Congested Cities

Despite technological advances in engines and fuels, the transportation sector is still one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gas (GHG). Driving patterns, including eco-driving techniques, are a complementary measure for saving GHG emissions. Most eco-driving studies so far have been conducted in large cities suffering chronic congestion problems. The aim of this research is therefore to analyse the potential of driver behaviour for reducing emissions in a small non-congested city. Driver performance parameters such as travel speeds, number of stops, revolutions per minute, and maximum acceleration-deceleration are also studied. The methodology is designed to measure the effect of both eco-driving and eco-routing under real traffic conditions. A campaign was carried out in the city of Caceres (Spain) to collect data on various types of roads under different traffic conditions. This research concludes that eco-driving leads to CO 2 savings on all routes and road types of 17% in gasoline engines and 21% in diesel, although travel times are increased by 7.5% on average. The shortest route is also the most ecological, regardless of the traffic volume and characteristics, implying that consumption in non-congested cities depends mainly on distance travelled rather than driving patterns in terms of number of stops, speed and acceleration.

Abstract:The lonelier evacuees find themselves, the riskier become their wayfinding decisions. This research supports single evacuees in a dynamically changing environment with risk-aware guidance. It deploys the concept of decentralized evacuation, where evacuees are guided by smartphones acquiring environmental knowledge and risk information via exploration and knowledge sharing by peer-to-peer communication. Peer-to-peer communication, however, relies on the chance that people come into communication range with each other. This chance can be low. To bridge between people being not at the same time at the same places, this paper suggests information depositories at strategic locations to improve information sharing. Information depositories collect the knowledge acquired by the smartphones of evacuees passing by, maintain this information, and convey it to other passing-by evacuees. Multi-agent simulation implementing these depositories in an indoor environment shows that integrating depositories improves evacuation performance: It enhances the risk awareness and consequently increases the chance that people survive and reduces their evacuation time. For evacuating dynamic events, deploying depositories at staircases has been shown more effective than deploying them in corridors.

In order to improve networks efficiency, a considerable number of studies has been addressing the potential of eco-friendly assignment solutions as alternative approaches to reduce emissions and/or fuel use. So far the majority of studies generally assumes that the most eco-friendly solutions are the ones that minimize the absolute amount of emissions produced along a certain trip. In this work a platform based on both empirical GPS data and microscopic simulation models of traffic, emissions, noise, and road safety was developed to examine in depth 4 routes of an origindestination pair over a Portuguese city. In addition to the integrated externalities assessment based on state of the art techniques, a novelty of this work was the preliminary inclusion of social criteria in defining sustainable assignment solutions. This paper provides new insights about sustainable traffic management issues and addresses multiple novel route choice indicators. Specifically we found that the relative variation of the individual costs and total pollution produced among 4 routes varies to a factor of 1.4 while the variation of the potentially exposed population ranges up to a factor of 10. The main results confirm the need to take into account real-time urban activity patterns in order to effectively implement sustainable traffic management measures.
