An evaluation of the use of olanzapine pamoate depot injection in seriously violent men with schizophrenia in a UK high-security hospital

Abstract: The findings of this study are important in showing that all patients who responded to olanzapine pamoate also showed a decrease in violent behaviour. The potential anti-aggression effects of olanzapine pamoate may represent a very promising area for further work. A depot antipsychotic medication that reduces violence could have significant implications for management of high-security patients.

“…This finding supports the available efficacy data of olanzapine LAI in patients with schizophrenia [27,28] and occasional case reports which have reported a beneficial effect of olanzapine LAI in patients with TRS. [35,36] Present study results also show that the majority of the patients continued to receive olanzapine LAI with a mean duration of 17 months. Only about one-fourth of the patients discontinued olanzapine LAI, of whom half were reluctant to receive the injection.…”

“…19,20 There are previous studies from HSHs reporting the benefit of the use of LAI antipsychotic medication. 21,22 Although it has not been explored in the literature, it can be hypothesized that LAI antipsychotics may be beneficial to violent schizophrenia patients such as ours because of the reduction in noncompliance it offers.…”

“…Several studies have shown that LAI-APs may reduce the risk of relapse and hospitalisation. There is also some preliminary evidence that LAIs may reduce comorbid violent behaviour in patients with schizophrenia [6,7].…”
