An evaluation of the use of stilboestrol and antibiotics in the early management of acute puerperal breast abscess

Abstract: One hundred and seventy‐five cases of acute breast abscess treated surgically have been described. The supposed rationale for the early use of stilboestrol and antibiotics in this condition has been reviewed. Neither stilboestrol nor antibiotics confers any benefit with regard to rate of healing or recurrent abscess formation after incision. “…There is no particular reason why the lactating patient should stop breast feeding if she wishes to continue to do so, although, in fact, lactation will cease spontaneously in around 50% of women who develop acute puerperal breast abscess [7]. Inhibition of lactation may actually hinder rapid resolution of the abscess by producing increasingly viscid secretions that tend to promote rather than reduce breast engorgement.…”
