An Examination of Coach and Player Relationships According to the Adapted LMX 7 Scale: A Validity and Reliability Study

Abstract: The current study aims to test the reliability and validity of the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX 7) scale with regard to coach-player relationships in sports settings. A total of 330 professional soccer players from the Turkish Super League as well as from the First and Second Leagues participated in this study. Factor analyses were performed to test the construct validity of the LMX 7. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a one-factor solution for the LMX 7. Confirmatory factor analysis showed acceptable fit in… Show more

“…For the CFA, we tested the a priori one-dimensional factorial structure proposed by the authors [ 7 ], emerged via the EFA, and presented in other previous studies [ 11 , 26 , 29 , 31 , 48 ]. The goodness of fit of the values was interpreted following the literature recommendations [ 49 ].…”

“…Several studies (e.g., Gutermann et al, 2017) choose to use some of the items of the scale instead of giving all of the items due to feasibility reasons in multilevel studies. Three items with the highest factor loadings in the literature and the validation studies in the Turkish context were chosen from the original seven items (e.g., Joseph et al, 2011;Caliskan, 2015). A sample item from this scale is "How well did your leader understand your job problems and needs today?".…”
