An exclusive in-situ dataset on physicochemical parameters in the gappy northern Bay of Bengal

Abstract: In-situ measurement of physical characteristics of seawater (temperature, salinity, and density) collected with a single fire module CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) in the northern Bay of Bengal (NBoB), as a part of the Indian Ocean, are given in this article. Due to the scanty of data in the NBoB, such in-situ measurements will certainly play a crucial role in understanding regional oceanic processes. The presented data were collected onboard during two cruises covering 12 stations with high resolution… Show more

“…This CTD probe is capable of measuring to 2000-m depth with a temperature accuracy of AE0.002°C and a conductivity accuracy of AE0.002 mS cm −1 . 62 The most recent CTD profiles were collected in three field sessions. The first session took place in January 2020, during a field expedition by the Department of Oceanography and Hydrography of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University (BSMRMU) aboard a fishing boat.…”

“…The cruises occurred over 3 months, and they sampled vertical depths down to 50 m. The raw CTD data were processed into a more user-friendly NetCDF format for efficient storage, usage, and sharing. 62 Vertical profiles of temperature and salinity were taken from this processed CTD data. In this study, only surface values of temperature and salinity were analyzed; a follow-up study is planned to compare subsurface temperature and salinity to model output.…”

“…This bay ensembles higher magnitudes of changes in the aspect of thermodynamic parameters, compared to its neighboring Arabian Sea or the northern Indian Ocean [1] . Yet, a lack of collaborative research and research vessel, as well as paucity and unavailability of observational data [2] , restricts through and continuous monitoring of these physico-chemical dynamics. The input of a large quantity of freshwater from major rivers [3] have a dominant influence on physico-chemical properties, therefore, needs to analyze with in-situ data of this region.…”

“…Despite its importance, the Bay of Bengal is one of the most understudied bodies of water in the world ( 9 ). Consequently, the microbial communities at the foundation of the BoB ecosystem remain poorly understood.…”
