An experiment to measure theI-Vcharacteristics of a silicon solar cell

Abstract: Solar cells often capture the public's attention and are a source of fascination to students (Hamakawa 1987, Zweibel 1990). We have found it profitable to tap this interest in solar cells by introducing students at an early stage of their undergraduate curriculum to the rudiments of photovoltaic devices. The purpose of this article is to describe a very simple experiment that allows college students in introductory physics courses to plot the I-V characteristics of a solar cell, and hence measure important pho… Show more

“…The degree of adhesion was qualitatively tested using a Scotch tape test, if the shedding area exceeds a certain proportion, it is considered that it will not pass the adhesion test [18]. The photo-conversion efficiency of CIGS solar cell was measured and calculated using the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics under standard AM 1.5 and 100 mW/cm 2 illumination at room temperature [19].…”

“…Figure 7 shows the -characteristics of samples A to D obtained under sun illumination. A lot of parameters relating to solar cell circuit could be extracted fromcurves such as sc , oc , sh , and [24][25][26]. sc represents the maximum current at short circuit circumstance and reflects the capability of generating current.…”

“…From the I-V and P-V curves, some basic parameters such as fill factor (FF) and electricity conversion efficiency ( can be determined for the BIPVT under different irradiances with different water flowrates by following some fundamental studies in the literature [49,50]. The Fill Factor (FF) is essentially an index of the BIPVT panel quality.…”
