An experimental and numerical investigation on the process efficiency of the focused-tungsten inert gas welding of Inconel 718 thick plates

Abstract: A combined experimental and numerical approach was adopted to investigate the focused-tungsten inert gas welding process by producing bead-on-plate welds in Inconel 718 plates. Experimental investigations were carried out by means of thermocouple measurements and optical macrographs of the weld cross-section. Three-dimensional finite element simulations were conducted using the commercial specialized finite element software Sysweld in order to predict the thermal field induced by the process in the plates. The… Show more

“…The selected material for the frame design of the three-wheeled vehicle, the aluminium alloy EN AW 6063.T66, was the subject of laboratory tests to find the tensile strength by means of a static tensile test. The test represents a standard procedure by evaluating and verifying the strength characteristics of the materials [12,16,17]. However, in this case, a sample with the weld was tested to measure its impact on the selected material.…”

“…This software, applying the finite element method for calculation, is used to obtain knowledge on heat conductivity in the welded material, its deformations during and after the welding process, the origin and extent of the residual stresses [12][13][14]. The programme contains models for a wide range of materials, namely steels, aluminium alloys, and other high-strength materials for complex applications [15,16,18,19].…”

“…Over the past studies, some numerical models have been provided to evaluate the temperature and residual stress distributions for the single and multi-pass welding of steel pipes. 6–10,1316 Abid et al 17 presented a 3D simulation of stationary gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) to study the arc and weld pool developments in different joint types of L-shape, V-shape, and open-corner. The temperature, heat flux, current density, and gas shear stress were utilized in the arc as input parameters to achieve the heat, the fluid flow and the weld pool shape.…”

“…These factors included performance and economic indicators, but no environmental and social factors were considered. Salerno et al 13 conducted a study to measure the efficiency of GTAW of Inconel 718. Bevilacqua et al 14 proved that FSW has a lower environmental impact than GMAW during aluminum welding.…”
