“…Here I report on the recovery of several thousand common bean cotyledons and fragments and several hundred whole seeds from a pit feature at the late sixteenth to early seventeenth-century AD ancestral Oneida Diable site, which was the subject of limited avocational excavations in the 1980s (Bennett et al 2007;Gibson 1991;Weiskotten 2007). A comparison of cotyledons from this site with the morphology of cotyledons from the recent charring experiments (Hart 2021;Whyte 2019) allow an interpretation of taphonomy for the Diable site beans. These results provide additional clues for common bean seed preservation in the archaeological record.…”
