Cryptic coloration is an adaptative defensive mechanism against predators. Color patterns can become cryptic through background coloration‐matching and disruptive coloration. Disruptive coloration may evolve in visually heterogeneous microhabitats, whereas background matching could be favored in chromatically homogeneous microhabitats. In this work, we used digital photography to explore the potential use of disruptive coloration and background matching in males and females of two grasshopper species of the Sphenarium genus in different habitats. We found chromatic differences in the two grasshopper species that may be explained by local adaptation. We also found that the females and males of both species are dichromatic and seem to follow different color cryptic strategies, males are more disruptive than females, whereas females have a high background matching with less disruptive elements. The selective pressures of the predators in different microhabitats and the differences in mobility between sexes may explain the color pattern divergence between females and males. Nevertheless, more field experiments are needed in order to understand the relative importance of disruptive and background matching coloration in the evolution of sexual dichromatism in these grasshoppers.

Antecedentes: Los matorrales xerófilos de México se han estudiado florística y ecológicamente, pero pocos estudios incluyen el método panbiogeográfico para describir los patrones de distribución de sus especies. Hipótesis: La Región Xerofítica Mexicana contiene una riqueza alta de especies endémicas de México que se relacionan con el bioma matorral xerófilo, la mayoría son propias de esta región. Con base en estas especies se puede proponer una regionalización de las zonas áridas de México. Área de estudio: Región Xerofítica Mexicana. Resultados: Se identificaron 11 trazos generalizados ubicados en las provincias biogeográficas de Baja California, Sonora, Altiplano Norte, Altiplano Sur y Eje Volcánico. Se registraron 13 nodos biogeográficos, la mayoría ubicados en el Altiplano Sur. Las especies endémicas analizadas son características del matorral xerófilo, algunas de ellas se comparten con los bosques templados. Conclusiones: Se reconocieron cinco zonas áridas de México: Desierto de Sonora, Valle de Tehuacán-Cuicatlán, Desierto Chihuahuense, zona árida Guanajuato-Jalisciense y zona árida Queretano-Hidalguense. Es probable que las últimas cuatro áreas constituyeran una zona árida continua, fragmentada por eventos geológicos y climáticos recientes. Los nodos registrados permitieron reconocer áreas con riqueza alta de endemismos que deben ser conservadas.

Questions: What is the potential use of maps derived from a merged geographical and phytosociological approach to support the design of public environmental policies? Do these approaches and data sources deliver complementary land-cover/vegetation maps?Objective: The present article documents a joint phytosociological and geographical approach to improve vegetation cartography in temperate-tropical transitional ecosystems. Location: The research was conducted at national (Mexico) and state (Michoacán) scales. Mexico and Michoacán have been recognized as regions of high ecogeographical complexity, where temperate-tropical conditions intermingle, creating large eco-socio-cultural mosaics. Methods: Data from 268 field verification sites and 223 relevés surveyed during the last two decades and recent land cover sources were used as the main inputs. The results were further validated by three workshops with local botanists and field verification during 2021. Results: At the national level, Mexico's forests, shrubs, herbs, and non-vascular major formation classes were hierarchically split by dominant life forms and prevailing climatic affiliations. At the state level, these major formation classes split into 19 subformations, of which 15 were forest communities. Conclusions: We discuss the scientific challenge of transitioning from land cover into vegetation maps and (dis)similarities of approaches reviewing concepts and analytical (quanti)qualitative instruments. The paper contrasts the present output with the experiences of other countries such as Canada, the United States, Bolivia, and Colombia.
