A 2D depth-averaged model has been developed for simulating water flow, sediment transport and morphological changes in gravel-bed rivers. The model was validated with a series of laboratory experiments and then applied to the Nove reach of the Brenta River (Northern Italy) to assess its bed material transport, interpret channel response to a series of intensive flood events (R.I. ≈ 10 years) and provide a possible evolutionary scenario for the medium term. The study reach is 1400 m long with a mean slope of 0.0039 m m À1 . High-resolution digital terrain models were produced combining LiDAR data with colour bathymetry techniques. Extensive field sedimentological surveys were also conducted for surface and subsurface material. Data were uploaded in the model and the passage of two consecutive high intensity floods was simulated. The model was run under several hypotheses of sediment supply: one considering substantial equilibrium between sediment input and transport capacity, and the others reducing the sediment supply. The sediment supply was then calibrated comparing channel morphological changes as observed in the field and calculated by the model. Annual bed material transport was assessed and compared with other techniques. Low-frequency floods (R.I. ≈ 1.5 years) are expected to produce negligible changes in the channel while high floods may erode banks rather than further incising the channel bed. Location and distribution of erosion and deposition areas within the Nove reach were predicted with acceptable biases stemming from imperfections of the model and the specified initial, boundary and forcing conditions. A medium-term evolutionary scenario simulation underlined the different response to and impact of a consecutive sequence of floods.

Calculation of bedload transport in Swiss mountain rivers using the model sedFlow: proof of concept

Abstract.Fully validated numerical models specifically designed for simulating bedload transport dynamics in mountain streams are rare. In this study, the recently developed modelling tool sedFlow has been applied to simulate bedload transport in the Swiss mountain rivers Kleine Emme and Brenno. It is shown that sedFlow can be used to successfully reproduce observations from historic bedload transport events with plausible parameter set-ups, meaning that calibration parameters are only varied within ranges of uncertainty that have been predetermined either by previous research or by field observations in the simulated study reaches. In the Brenno river, the spatial distribution of total transport volumes has been reproduced with a Nash-Sutcliffe goodness of fit of 0.733; this relatively low value is partially due to anthropogenic extraction of sediment that was not considered. In the Kleine Emme river, the spatial distribution of total transport volumes has been reproduced with a goodness of fit of 0.949. The simulation results shed light on the difficulties that arise with traditional flow-resistance estimation methods when macro-roughness is present. In addition, our results demonstrate that greatly simplified hydraulic routing schemes, such as kinematic wave or uniform discharge approaches, are probably sufficient for a good representation of bedload transport processes in reach-scale simulations of steep mountain streams. The influence of different parameters on simulation results is semi-quantitatively evaluated in a simple sensitivity study. This proof-of-concept study demonstrates the usefulness of sedFlow for a range of practical applications in alpine mountain streams.

We present a quasi three-dimensional numerical model to simulate stony debris flows, considering a continuum fluid phase of water and fine sediments, and a non-continuum phase of large particles, such as boulders. Large particles are treated in a Lagrangian frame of reference using the Discrete Element Method in three dimensions. The fluid phase is governed by the depth-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in two horizontal dimensions and is solved by the Finite Element Method. The model simulates particle-particle collisions and wall-particle collisions, taking into account that particles are immersed in the fluid. Bingham and Cross rheological models are used for the continuum phase. Both formulations provide stable results, even in the range of very low shear rates. The Bingham formulation is better able to simulate the stopping stage of the fluid. The results of the numerical simulations are compared with data from laboratory experiments on a flume-fan model. The results show that the model is capable of simulating the motion of big particles moving in the fluid flow, handling dense particulate flows that avoid overlapping among particles. An application to simulate a debris flow event that occurred in Northern Venezuela in 1999 shows that the model replicates well the main observed boulder accumulation areas.
