An exposé of bioenergy and its potential and utilization in Turkey

Abstract: Turkey is heavily dependent on expensive imported energy resources (oil, gas and coal) that place a big burden on the economy. Air pollution is also becoming a great environmental concern in the country. In this regard, renewable energy resources appear to be one of the most efficient and effective solutions for clean and sustainable energy development in Turkey.Turkey's renewable sources are the second largest source for energy production after coal. About two-thirds of the renewable energy produced is obtain… Show more

“…The study was able to capture the dimensions of students' perceptions and attitudes toward bioenergy from an international perspective. Energy policies should aim for ensuring sufficient, reliable, and affordable energy supplies to support economic and social development, while protecting the environment [24]. The modern bioenergy in order to meet these criteria must be produced, converted, and used sustainably to demonstrate its environmental and socioeconomic benefits in comparison to fossil fuels [35].…”

“…Biomass as a source of RE has great potential in Turkey due to the availability of vast and abundant forests and agricultural residues in the countryside [35]. Domestic energy consumption in Turkey is 37% of the total energy consumption and biomass provides 52% of it, mostly in the rural areas for heating and cooking [18,24]. Although wood is the primary heating fuel in 6.5 million houses in Turkey, a general lack of public acceptance and willingness to utilize bioenergy is a major obstacle for bioenergy development in Turkey [24].…”

“…Turkey is the country which has this potential and ecological structure (Demirbas 2002;2003;Demirbas and Urkmez 2006;Ozturk and Bascetincelik 2006;Bascetincelik et al, 2009a;. Similarly, Erdogdu (2008) emphasized that Turkey has a substantial amount of renewable energy sources that can play a significant role to meet the total energy demand of network of the country. Turkey's renewable sources of energy make up the second largest energy production pool after the coal.…”

“…Bioenergy is broadly detailed as all sort of fuel whose components were obtained utilizing biomass, such as biodiesel, bioethanol, biogas [24,25]. Similar to worldwide Turkey's biomass sources are mainly forests and bush, farm and urban trees, agricultural wastes (for instance leaves, plant stems, saw dust, bagasse, nutshell, and rice husks), and domestic residues (such as rubbish and sewage) [26], however, dry agriculture residue and woody materials can be defined as the best sources for biomass potential [27].…”
