An Fiber Bragg Grating-Based Monitoring System for Slope Deformation Studies in Geotechnical Centrifuges

Abstract: Centrifugal model tests, which can reproduce the deformation process of the slope, play a crucial role in investigating the mechanism of slope failure. The FBG-based sensors, with high precision, electromagnetic resistance, light weight and small size, have been introduced into geotechnical centrifuge monitoring. The slope evolution is a complex multi-parameter dynamic process which involves the interaction of displacement, stress and strain. However, current research is mainly focused on one or two monitoring… Show more

“…By using the change in the scattered light characteristic quantity in the optical fiber caused by external factors, the related physical amount of the measured object along the optical fiber can be continuously monitored for a long distance [25] (Figure 5). In the latest twenty years, the application field of fiber optic sensing technology has constantly expanded, and the types of sensing cables are also increasing [26][27][28]. However, rocksoil mass will undergo multi-scale deformation in applications.…”

“…Hu et al [25] proposed a fiber Bragg grating-based monitoring and warning system for expressway slopes, and the four-level early warning method based on statistical analysis was introduced, characterized by four different displacement rate ranges. Zhang et al [26] investigated internal deformation and the failure of a centrifuge model slope with horizontally and vertically embedded FBG arrays. Zhang et al [27] designed a real-time monitoring system based on FBG technology for the Majiagou landslide, which records the displacement at the deeper sliding surface, together with the rainfall, water level, pore water pressure, and temperature, and according to the analysis of these data, the stability evaluation of the slope was carried out.…”
