For example, Carswell et al (2019, p. 599) have investigated experiences of waiting by poor, low‐class Dalits and Muslims in routine encounters with the state in India and found that when low‐income Indians apply for state pensions, the “temporal uncertainty around whether the pension will materialise resulted in a chronic state of despair, fear or expectation.” A growing body of work has also revealed the gendered aspects of waiting in diverse contexts, such as in relation to transport (Fan et al, 2016), unemployment (Mulinari, 2021), healthcare (Tiseyra et al, 2021), singlehood (Lahad, 2012), and migration (Brun, 2015; Mountz, 2011).…”
