An imbalance in the production of IL‐1β and IL‐6 by monocytes of bipolar patients: restoration by lithium treatment

Abstract: Blood monocytes have an altered proinflammatory status in BD. Lithium treatment restores this altered status. Short-term in vitro exposure of monocytes to lithium has other effects than lithium treatment.

“…It also exerts a broad range of effects on immune cells and is reported to inhibit inflammation and apoptosis. It is speculated that this may be one of the mechanisms of action of Lithium since inflammation and aberrant immune responses are often associated with psychiatric diseases (Knijff et al, 2007;Makoukji et al, 2012). LiCl treatment is reported to protect against TNF-α endotoxemia, experimental colitis, type II collagen-induced arthritis, zymosan and ovalbumin-induced asthma.…”

“…Chronic inflammation exists in medicated bipolar patients displaying varied correlations with leptin, insulin, soluble TNF receptor-1 (sTNF-R1), and IL-1Ra (11). Notwithstanding, controversy exists as to whether these phenomena are state-dependent (5), normalize in remission (18), or represent trait markers exacerbated by the affective episodes (19). These discrepancies may be explained by heterogeneity in mood state, methodological differences, and not controlling for known confounds, such as obesity (6).…”
