An improved rapid physicochemical assay method for aflatoxin in peanuts and peanut products

Abstract: A practical, short cut, sensitive method for more rapidly determining aflatoxin in peanuts and peanut products has been developed. This was in response to the need to reduce the time required for analyses of peanut products in process. Through reductions in solvent volumes, utilization of pressure filtration for clarification, and substitution of liquid :liquid extraction for a lengthy column clean up, equivalent results are possible in less than one half the time required for the current official procedures. … Show more

“…The first moment of equation 1 is Ul = Xq/p = M [41 and the second moment about the mean is la 2 = Kq/p 2 = M + (M2/K) = 02 [ 5 ] where o 2 is the variance of the kernel population in the minilot. Equation 5 shows that tr2 /> M for the negative binomial distribution.…”

“…Analyses were performed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) with densitometric analysis (CAMAG 11) employing reference standards (Sigma). Mycotoxins analyzed were aflatoxins BI, B2, GI, and G2 by the modified BF method as reported elsewhere for all products [Waltking et al, 19681 and for meats [Stubblefield and Shotwell, 19811, aflatoxin MI [Stubblefield, 19791, zearalenone [Waltking et al, 1968;Pifieiro and Giribone, 19941, deoxynivalenol [Trucksess et al, 1984;Eppley et al, 19861, ochratoxin A [Waltking et al, 1968; Piiieiro and Giribone, 19941, and ergot alkaloids: ergotamine, ergocornine, ergocristine, alpha-ergokryptine [Scott and Lawrence, 19801.…”
