An incarcerated inguinal hysterocele in a pregnant bitch: a case report

Abstract: A 3.5-year-old Boxer breed bitch was referred to our clinic with a history of progressive and painless inguinal mass on the left side with no significant general symptoms. Ultrasonographic examination of the inguinal mass and abdomen revealed a hypo echoic area covered with a hyper echoic capsule in inguinal mass and also two 40-day-old live foetuses, respectively. During ventral midline laparotomy, an incarcerated left uterus horn was detected in an inguinal hernia. A successful herniorraphy and ovariohystere… Show more

“…Hernia may result from congenital defects or from blunt trauma with increased abdominal pressure. They are also often seen in bitches with apparent enlargement of the uterus due to pyometra or pregnancy (Serin et al 2009). This was seen also in our case.…”

“…Acquired uterine inguinal hernias are reported in old bitches and are most commonly associated with pregnancy, 9 pyometra 2,3 or rarely with hydrometra/mucometra 10 . Otherwise, reports of inguinal herniation of neoplastic uterus are exceptionally rare and lack radiographic and ultrasonographic findings 4 .…”

“…Abdominal radiographs may be suggestive of a mass, but localisation to the uterus may be difficult except during pregnancy or severe pyometra. 9 Ultrasonography is useful to assess the content of the hernial sac, along with information concerning uterine wall thickness and composition, lumen size and content. Ultrasound is a useful tool for the diagnosis of uterine tumours.…”

“…Hysterocele is an inheritance of low frequency in canine and rare in feline, characterized by the protrusion of the uterus by the inguinal channel, a situation related with the congenital abnormality of the inguinal ring, allowing the protrusion of abdominal contents for the subcutaneous space [7,8,13]. Situations leading to the increase of intra-abdominal pressure such as gestation, obesity and pyometra may be associated with the formation of inguinal hysterocele and, it is also speculated that the hormonal imbalance promotes the weakening of connective tissue resulting in the enlargement of the hernia ring [3,11].…”

“…As differential diagnosis of hysterocele are the breast cancer, abscesses and bruises [11,13]. Image exams such as radiography and ultrasonography have large relevance for identifying the disease and, additionally, clarify the hernia content [3,8].…”
