An indoor air quality and thermal comfort appraisal in a retrofitted university building via low-cost smart sensor

Abstract: Occupant health can be strongly influenced by indoor air quality due to time spent indoors (90%). Such quality can be impacted by indoor atmospheric pollutants present. Therefore, demand-controlled ventilation can be a key to improving indoor air quality. The main aim herein is to scrutinize measurement results of several air pollutants possibly existing inside university building including CO2, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, benzene, CO, PM2.5 during three measurement campaigns (March 2017, May 201… Show more

“…Apart from the comfort, air velocity could also affect the indoor air quality. 1,51 However, due to the absence of fans, very few instances were seen when there was significant air velocity around subjects and in most cases, the anemometer with a low resolution (0.1 m/s) returned zero reading showing the presence of still air condition. Nicol and Humphreys 48 further states that even at still air condition, due to convection current and bodily movement, there could be some air velocity relative to the human body, and thus cannot be treated as zero.…”

“…3 Thus, the ASHRAE Standard 55 3 prescribes a regression analysis of the thermal sensation votes (TSV) with the indoor operative temperature (t op ). However, this method of using regression analysis to find comfort (neutral) temperatures depends upon: (1) the correlation between the TSV and the t op and (2) the location of mean TSV from the thermal neutrality, and thus are prone to extraneous outputs, as seen in various research. 57 In contrast, Griffiths 58 proposed a method of calculating the comfort temperature (equation ( 10)), which contains a Griffiths' constant R representing the change in the rate of sensation votes (TSV) with the change in operative temperature considering no adaptation has taken place.…”

“…These circumstances determine that one of the most demanding challenges facing educational building administrators is IAQ managing [15]. An adequate ventilation rate (VR) is one of the key elements to avoid compromising the IAQ since providing outdoor air ventilation dilutes internally generated contaminants to levels that do not cause health and comfort problems [16].…”
