An integrated health delivery platform, targeting soil-transmitted helminths (STH) and canine mediated human rabies, results in cost savings and increased breadth of treatment for STH in remote communities in Tanzania

Abstract: BackgroundAchieving the Sustainable Development Goal of a 90% reduction in neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by 2030 requires innovative control strategies. This proof-of-concept study examined the effectiveness of integrating control programs for two NTDs: mass drug administration (MDA) for soil-transmitted helminths in humans and mass dog rabies vaccination (MDRV).MethodsThe study was carried out in 24 Tanzanian villages. The primary goal was to demonstrate the feasibility of integrating community-wide MDA f… Show more

“…An ongoing wave of locusts in the GHA has led to the destruction of crops and pasture, with climate conditions expected to result in a dramatic increase in locust numbers during the coming months (Regional Desert Locust Alliance 2020). COVID-19 may limit entry into pastoral areas by Table 3 Examples of a One Health approach in pastoral areas in the GHA (Griffith et al 2020;Kamadjeu et al 2015;Lankester et al 2019;Mtui-Malamsha et al 2020;Musoke et al 2016;Ndejjo et al 2019;Onyango et al 2019 locust control personnel and result in personal protective equipment (PPE) "competition," as both locust control and health activities require PPE. Designation of locust control as essential can ensure access to pastoral areas, while a coordinated response by governments and development partners can help to ensure that PPE specialized for use in pesticide application is available (Regional Desert Locust Alliance 2020).…”

“…A One Health combined delivery platform for Maasai pastoralists combined mass drug administration for soiltransmitted helminths in humans and mass dog rabies vaccination in Tanzania. This approach was highly regarded among the community and saved costs and time (Lankester et al 2019). In Uganda, the integration of vaccination and health education to combat brucellosis was perceived by pastoralists and health service providers as feasible and desirable (Kansiime et al 2015).…”

“…In Tanzania, integrated delivery of human anthelminthic treatments through dog rabies control programmes proved to be popular as well as cost- and time-saving, also managing to reach children not enrolled in school who otherwise might be missed by school-based delivery strategies. 9 …”
