An Investigation of Abrasive Water Jet Machining on Graphite/Glass/Epoxy Composite

Abstract: In the present research work, the effect of abrasive water jet (AWJ) machining parameters such as jet operating pressure, feed rate, standoff distance (SOD), and concentration of abrasive on kerf width produced on graphite filled glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite is investigated. Experiments were conducted based on Taguchi's L 27 orthogonal arrays and the process parameters were optimized to obtain small kerf. The main as well as interaction effects of the process parameters were analyzed using the analys… Show more

“…As a result, kerf widths decreased with increased traverse feed rate. The kerf angle, in turn, also decreased [34]. The increase in stand-off distance caused a significant increase in kerf width.…”

“…Higher jet expansion causes an increase in the top kerf width together with a higher kinetic energy loss of the jet. Thus, a higher stand-off distance value reduces the machining capacity of the jet, and the bottom kerf width decreases, while the kerf angle increases [34].…”

“…Garnet produced smaller cutting width, and large taper angle compared to silicon carbide and aluminum oxide, while silicon carbide produced high cutting width and smaller taper owing to its high hardness compared to the other two abrasive particles. Dorewswamy et al [71] studied the effect of abrasive concentration on kerf taper using graphite filled GFRP composite as work material and garnet abrasive in the form of #80 mesh size. Abrasive concentration varied from 6 to 14 wt%.…”

“…The Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) machining parameters such as jet operating water pressure (WP), transverse speed (TS), Standoff Distance (SOD), and concentration of abrasive are important for controlled cutting operation [1]. The quality of machining can be improved by controlling the AWJM parameters [2]. Water jet technology at present increasingly being used in a variety of applications including mining, process, medical and for machining of difficult-to-cut materials like composites, super alloys, rocks and ceramics [3].…”
