“…Although EIA has not been reported in the border countries of Ardahan (Armenia and Georgia) so far, the presence of hematophagous vectors are important risk factors of EIA for equines (Erdem 2007). There are six reports on the frequency of EIAV using AGID and ELISA in Turkey so far (Burgu et al 1989;Turan et al 2002;Ataseven and Arslan 2005;Yapkic et al 2007;Kirmizigul et al 2009;Albayrak and Ozan 2010). None of these studies detected antibody against EIAV.…”

“…The ELISA test will detect antibodies somewhat earlier and at lower concentrations than the AGID test (Toma 1980). Studies concerning EIA have been carried out in different parts of Turkey (Burgu et al 1989;Turan et al 2002;Ataseven and Arslan 2005;Yapkic et al 2007;Kirmizigul et al 2009;Albayrak and Ozan 2010), but no report of detection of EIAV exists in Turkey.…”

“…EIAV belongs to the family Retroviridae and genus Lentivirus . EIAV was reported in many parts of the world, including North America [5], South America [6], Europe [1], and Asia [7-11]. Unfortunately, no medication that treats EIAV-infected horses is available.…”
