An investigation of the effects of polymer binder compositional variables on the corrosion control of aluminum alloys using magnesium-rich primers

Abstract: It has recently been shown that magnesium (Mg) particles possessing a thin oxide surface layer can be used to produce primers that provide corrosion protection to aluminum (Al) alloys through a galvanic coupling mechanism. In addition to the Mg particles, polymer binder properties also affect corrosion protection. As a result, the effects of compositional variables associated with a two-component epoxy binder system on the ability of Mg-rich primers to protect an aerospace Al alloy were determined. The variabl… Show more

“…Li et al investigated the effects of compositional variables associated with formulating a two-component epoxy-amine based Mg-rich primer for protecting alloy AA20224 T3 [51]. An optimized coating composition based on high molecular weight epoxy resin, amide-functional curing agent, epoxy:amine ratio of 1, and Mg volume content of 50% passed over 3,000 hours of ASTM B117 salt spray exposure.…”

“…In addition, electrochemical studies have been carried out to understand the corrosion protection mechanism supplied by Mg-rich primers in North Dakota State University [14]. Wang et al measured electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), electrochemical noise and other electrochemical information in accelerating corrosion damage of the Mg-rich coating [15]; Allahar et al used the Transmission-Line model to analyze and explain the EIS data of Mg-rich primer [16]; Li et al studied the effect of composition on Mg-rich primer's protecting performance for Al alloy applied in aircraft using electrochemical technology such as open circuit potential (OCP), EIS and energy spectrum analysis [17].…”

“…MgRPs can provide effective cathodic protection to Al alloys [12,13]. However, since MgRPs are formulated at high pigment volume concentration (PVC) to ensure cathodic protection, they show insufficient barrier properties and require a topcoat to realize good performance [14,15].…”
