An Open Source Tool for Simulating a Variety of Vision Impairments in Developing Swing Applications

Abstract: A lot of tools have been created lately in order to simulate how a vision impaired or color-blind person would perceive web rich-client applications and content. In this work we propose a simulation tool for non-web Java TM Swing applications. The aim is to assist the developers in preventing accessibility barriers and improving the overall quality throughout the design and implementation phases of the whole development process.

“…For instance, AGNES (Age Gain Now Empathy System) developed by the MIT AgeLab is designed to simulate several impairments as visual, motor or flexibility of a person. Therefore, they use an overall besides many different other components as a helmet, glasses or ear plugs [ 16 ]. Other age simulation suits make use of an overall with an integrated exoskeleton, that is controlled by a computer to add force on the participants’ joints and thus complicate movement.…”

“…Their main goal is to develop programmable systems that enable the simulation of several types/severity of impairment that can be easily selected and set. Specifically, the simulation of disabilities has been studied for visual impairments in the field of web-design and word processor software, with the development of simple software tools in [4], [5] and of a dedicated system for the design of accessible user interfaces based on EmD principles in [6].…”
