An open source virtual globe rendering engine for 3D applications: NASA World Wind

Abstract: Background: NASA World Wind is an open source application-programming interface for developing geographic information systems based on a virtual globe rendering engine representing a planet. NASA World Wind provides the ideal environment for scientific data, their analysis, visual representation and interaction with users, in a single platform, which can be deployed both as a Java desktop application (NASA World Wind) or a JavaScript web application (ESA-NASA Web World Wind).

“…It currently supplies projected and atmospherically corrected Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) (Murchie et al, 2007) coverages for Mars and projected Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) (Green et al, 2011) coverages for Moon. The client side of the PlanetServer uses NASA's Web WorldWind (Pirotti et al, 2017) as its visualization engine. The server side relies on the Rasdaman Raster Data Manager (Baumann et al, 2018) to deliver hyperspectral data to the user by Web Coverage Processing Service (WCPS) requests (Baumann, 2010).…”

“…An example is the recent Google Earth VR project that aims at providing people with VR experience over the Google Earth platform [62]. Another example is the platform for sharing user-generated content ( Figure 3) built over Nasa World Wind [63]. The collaborative platform, named Policrowd, visualizes the points of interest (POI) and related multimedia files (texts, pictures, sounds, videos), collected and contributed by the citizens through apps.…”
