An outbreak of Candida parapsilosis fungemia among preterm infants

Abstract: ABSTRACT. In this article, we describe the first outbreak of Candida parapsilosis fungemia in our hospital. We examined a cluster of four nosocomial cases of C. parapsilosis fungemia that occurred in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the Affiliated Xingtai People's Hospital of Hebei Medical University over a two-week period. We ascertained patient parameters including clinical characteristics, blood and sputum cultures, and drug sensitivity test results. Cultures from eight blood samples obtained from… Show more

“…Although several outbreaks of Candida parapsilosis have been documented (14)(15)(16)(17), transmission of Candida between patients in health care settings has rarely been an infection control concern. Candida infections were thought to primarily originate from translocation of host flora to normally sterile sites, such as the bloodstream, or, in the case of oral or vulvovaginal candidiasis, an overgrowth of normal flora.…”

“…Candida parapsilosis complex outbreaks have been reported worldwide since 2004, mainly in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), however the information regarding the susceptibility pattern of isolates has only been evaluated in a few studies (Wang et al, 2016; Benedict et al, 2017). The failure of infection prevention and control programs, such as inadequate environmental disinfection and hand hygiene, may be the main reason for the emergence of these outbreaks in hospital settings (Guo et al, 2015; Qi et al, 2018).…”

“…In neonates, C. parapsilosis is the second most common yeast associated with bloodstream infections [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Additionally, several studies have reported that C. parapsilosis is a common source of outbreaks in NICUs [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. All three patients with invasive fungal infections had underlying medical conditions and indwelling medical devices.…”
