“…Outbreaks of sepsis/bacteremia (4,18,74,88,116,157,215,238,258,310,341,359,362,423), meningitis (74,88,116,157,362,423), conjunctivitis (74,88,116), UTIs (116), respiratory tract infections (74,88,116,285,359), and wound infections (362) due to S. marcescens have all been described for pediatric patients since the series of infections described by McCormack and Kunin in 1966 (259). Conjunctivitis appears to be more common in pediatric population outbreaks in hospitals than in adult populations.…”

“…This sensitivity may be related to the thin cell walls and susceptibility of these bacteria to acidic metabolites. S. marcescens is involved in different hospital-acquired infections, such as wound and urinary tract infections; hospital outbreaks caused by S. marcescens antibiotic-resistant strains have also been reported (Al Jarousha et al, 2008). Klebsiella pneumonia causes different diseases, such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections, particularly among the elderly with weakened immune system; K. pneumoniae strains also show high rates of resistance to antibiotics (Hussein et al, 2013;Shoma et al, 2014).…”

“…Significant risk factors for S. marcescens infections in neonates are a very low birthweight of <1500 g, being born premature at <37 weeks of gestation and receiving mechanical ventilation . A prolonged NICU stay leads to limited maternal contact and exposure to NICU flora and antibiotics and that is why the bacterial colonisation pattern of NICU neonates differs from that of healthy neonates .…”

“…Several outbreaks of S. marcescens in NICUs have been reported, with the duration ranging from several months to years (). This study describes an outbreak in a Finnish NICU, which was rapidly managed with hospital hygienic interventions and education.…”
