Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies play an essential role in achieving Net Zero Emissions targets. Considering the lack of timely reviews on the recent advancements in promising CCUS technologies, it is crucial to provide a prompt review of the CCUS advances to understand the current research gaps pertained to its industrial application. To that end, this review first summarized the developmental history of CCUS technologies and the current large-scale demonstrations. Then, based on a visually bibliometric analysis, the carbon capture remains a hotspot in the CCUS development. Noting that the materials applied in the carbon capture process determines its performance. As a result, the state-of-the-art carbon capture materials and emerging capture technologies were comprehensively summarized and discussed. Gaps between state-of-art carbon capture process and its ideal counterpart are analyzed, and insights into the research needs such as material design, process optimization, environmental impact, and technical and economic assessments are provided.

La recuperación de dióxido de carbono (CO2) en las destilerías de etanol es un factor importante que aporta beneficios económicos y ambientales. El objetivo de esta investigación fue obtener un modelo de simulación validado para la evaluación de la etapa de recuperación y purificación de CO2 en una destilería cubana. La metodología empleada consistió en obtención y validación del modelo de simulación en Aspen Hysys v.10.0, evaluación de alternativas de mejoras, y realización de un análisis técnico-económico. En el desarrollo de la simulación, se seleccionó NRTL para la estimación de las propiedades para el equilibrio entre el agua y las sustancias orgánicas a bajas presiones en la fase líquida e ideal para la fase vapor. Para el refrigerante, se seleccionó el modelo de Antoine, aplicable para sistemas a bajas presiones y considerando que el comportamiento de la fase líquida es ideal. El modelo de simulación obtenido en el caso base fue validado con los datos reales del proceso con un máximo error relativo inferior al 8 %. Se evaluaron cinco alternativas del ciclo de refrigeración en las que se emplearon nuevos refrigerantes (R-404a, R-290, R-152a, R-600a, R-417a) y se analizó la influencia de las variables de operación en los indicadores de comportamiento del sistema de refrigeración. Desde el punto de vista técnico, la mejor alternativa fue el R-600a, pero en comparación con el caso base, los resultados fueron inferiores. Con el empleo de los nuevos refrigerantes, al rediseñar el ciclo de refrigeración no se obtuvieron rendimientos superiores al 60%.

This work is based on a literature review (191). It mainly refers to two diagnostic methods based on artificial intelligence. This review presents new possibilities for using genetic algorithms (GAs) for diagnostic purposes in power plants transitioning to cooperation with renewable energy sources (RESs). The genetic method is rarely used directly in the modeling of thermal-flow analysis. However, this assignment proves that the method can be successfully used for diagnostic purposes. The GA method was presented in this work for thermal-flow studies of steam turbines controlled from the central power system to obtain the stability of RESs. It should be remembered that the development of software using genetic algorithms to locate one-off degradations is necessary for a turbine that works sustainably with RESs. In this paper, against the background of the review, diagnostic procedures create an inverse model of a thermal power plant. Algorithms were used to detect fast global extremes through the convergence of simulated signatures with signs explaining degradation. In addition, statistical dependencies are used in the selection phase to accelerate fault detection. The created procedure allows obtaining a diagnosis in the form of a single degradation. This procedure turns out to be quite effective for the above example.
