An Overview of Existing Experiences with Solar-Powered E-Bikes

Abstract: Electric bicycles (e-bikes) are considered a sustainable alternative to automobile transportation today. The electric bike includes all the benefits that conventional bicycles offer, plus faster, more comfortable and longer trips, as well as less effort for the user. In this paper, we specifically focus on a new type of e-bike, the so-called 'solar-powered e-bike'. Therefore, this review paper explores existing literature findings for the use of solar energy in transportation, and more specifically in e-bikes.… Show more

“…E-scooters, e-tricycles, and e-motorcycles are mostly lightweight and thus energyefficient, and their batteries can be small without losing too much range and allow for replacement and cost-efficient charging equipment including smart recharging stations [43]. According to Apostolou et al [44], the leading target group of Dutch solar e-bikes is that of commuters in the 40-60-year-old age group, with commuting distances longer than 6 km and a gross income higher than €2500. They conclude solar-powered e-bikes that can serve as a sustainable way of urban transport by displacing some conventional transportation.…”

“…In view of the disadvantages of traditional bicycles, the development of electric bicycles has begun, generally known as e-bicycles or e-bikes. In some designs the bicycle can be propelled solely by its electric powertrain, in others, electric assistance is added to pedaling, making it possible for less-fit individuals to ride on steep terrains and for longer distances, thus extending the usefulness of the bicycle [348,349].…”
