An overview of heavy oil properties and its recovery and transportation methods

Abstract: -Unconventional oils -mainly heavy oils, extra heavy oils and bitumens -represent a significant share of the total oil world reserves. Oil companies have expressed interest in unconventional oil as alternative resources for the energy supply. These resources are composed usually of viscous oils and, for this reason, their use requires additional efforts to guarantee the viability of the oil recovery from the reservoir and its subsequent transportation to production wells and to ports and refineries. This revie… Show more

“…4,8 The aromatic fraction is separated (washed off) from the adsorbent in the column using aromatic solvent such as benzene, and resins are eluted from the column with polar solvent such as methanol and chloroform. Aromatics contain compounds with one or more aromatic rings in which heteroatoms are normally embedded.…”

“…Many operations must be considered in a platform design for emulsion destabilization, including equipments such as coalescers and separators (Urdahl Brazilian Journal of Chemical Engineering et al, 2001). Santos et al (2014) provided an extensive revision of the methods involved on recovery and transportation methods of heavy oil.…”
