An overview of mosquito vectors of Zika virus

Abstract: The mosquito-borne arbovirus Zika virus (ZIKV, Flavivirus, Flaviviridae), has caused an outbreak impressive by its magnitude and rapid spread. First detected in Uganda in Africa in 1947, from where it spread to Asia in the 1960s, it emerged in 2007 on the Yap Island in Micronesia and hit most islands in the Pacific region in 2013. Subsequently, ZIKV was detected in the Caribbean, and Central and South America in 2015, and reached North America in 2016. Although ZIKV infections are in general asymptomatic or ca… Show more

“…Although the number of ZIKV cases have subsided, ZIKV remains a significant threat due to the sporadic and unpredictable nature of its outbreak. In addition, ZIKV shares the same vectors with another widespread flavivirus, DENV [93], which is projected to increase exponentially in the future [94]. Thus, the potential re-occurrence of outbreaks, coupled with devastating neurological complications, warrants for extensive research to completely understand the virus pathophysiology for antiviral drug development.…”

“…In recent years Zika (ZIK) virus pathogen, vectored by Ae. aegypti, has emerged as a major vector-borne disease, reaching Latin America and by 2017 impacting over 30 American countries (Zanluca et al, 2015;Boyer et al, 2018).…”

“…Ectoparasites act as vectors for many notable viral pathogens of vertebrates, including Zika virus, dengue virus, and tick-borne encephalitis virus (Boyer, Calvez, Chouin-Carneiro, Diallo, & Failloux, 2018; Lindquist & Vapalahti, 2008; Rodhain, 2015). Transmission can occur “biologically”, with active virus replication in the ectoparasite, or “mechanically” without ectoparasite replication (Chihota, Rennie, Kitching, & Mellor, 2001; Kuno & Chang, 2005; McColl et al, 2002; Rodhain, 2015).…”
