An Overview of Recent Advancements in Conducting Polymer–Metal Oxide Nanocomposites for Supercapacitor Application

Abstract: Supercapacitors have gained significant attention as energy storage devices due to their high specific power, fast charge–discharge rate and extended cycling stability. Recent research focuses on the search for new electrode materials to enhance the specific capacitance of supercapacitors. Conducting polymers (CPs) and metal oxides (MOs) are being extensively tested as electrode materials in supercapacitors. CPs have poor cycling stability and low mechanical strength but are easy to process, while MOs exhibit … Show more

“…The specific capacitances of components of composite (PSAC and PANI) and composite (PSAC/PANI) evaluated using Equation (1) in Appendix S1 from CV are shown in Table 1. High specific capacitance values are observed at low scan rates as electrolyte ions get sufficient time for the redox processes to occur 26 . It reveals the highest specific capacitance for PSAC (473 and 1145 F g −1 ) and lowest specific capacitance for PANI (81 and 155 F g −1 ) on both substrates.…”

“…The Electrochemical double‐layer capacitors (EDLCs) rely on ion adsorption at the interface between the electrolyte and the electrode while pseudocapacitors depend on quick and reversible surface redox processes. However, hybrid SCs involve combined mechanisms of both EDLC and pseudocapacitors 4–6 . Although, EDLC materials like carbons deliver reliable cycling stability and high power density but they suffer from poor capacitances 7 .…”
