An overview on the progress and development of modified sulfonated polyether ether ketone membranes for vanadium redox flow battery applications

Abstract: Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) are among the most promising approaches to efficiently store renewable energies. In such battery type, Nafion is commonly used as membrane material but suffers from high vanadium crossover and cost. These drawbacks negatively influence the widespread commercial application of VRFBs. Alternative membrane materials with high performance and low cost are thus being developed to address these shortfalls. Among those, possible materials for the VRFB membrane is sulfonated polyet… Show more

“…SPEEK was obtained and cleaned numerous times with deionized water before drying at 80 °C for 20 h. Sulfonation was confirmed by FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectra. Titration (Metrohm, 916 Ti-Touch potentiometric titrator) was then used to determine the degree of sulfonation (DS) of SPEEK, which was found to be ∼60% …”

“…Titration (Metrohm, 916 Ti-Touch potentiometric titrator) was then used to determine the degree of sulfonation (DS) of SPEEK, which was found to be ∼60%. 33 As shown in Scheme 1, for grafting of SA, SPEEK (10.00 g) was dissolved in a 250 mL reaction bottle containing 100 mL (10%, w/v) of DMF under strong agitation. Then, a known amount of CDI (8.9 mmol,1.44 g) (equivalent to 0.5 mol equivalent SPEEK −SO 3 H group) was added, 34 and SA (0.86 g) was added after stirring at 60 °C for 5 h. SPEEK-SA-50 was precipitated in excess propan-2-ol after stirring at 60 °C for another 5 h then rinsed several times with propan-2-ol and deionized water.…”

“…For material comparison, only the base polymer of the membrane is considered, as production of 3D membranes is usually carried out in the form of a composite membrane, i.e., 3D printing is used to manufacture the support, while other techniques are used to produce a selective layer. Materials are listed on the basis of reviews of conventional membranes [1,[21][22][23][24][25], 3DP polymers [17,18,20,26], and reviewed articles on 3DP membranes. Some 3D membrane materials are directly produced using common 3D printing technologies.…”
