“…When RYMV particles are not stored in vacuoles but appear in large quantities in the cytoplasm, then degenerative changes occur within chloroplasts in mesophyll cells [ 154 ]. Other cellular changes include proliferation of tonoplast membranes bulging into the vacuole in SoMV-infected [ 180 ] or CfMV-infected [ 181 ] host cells.…”

“…A high stability of virions is required for translocation via xylem because of the action of proteases during programmed cell death of tracheary elements [ 183 , 184 ]. Also SoMV, BSSV, and SMAMV have been observed rather in xylem than in phloem [ 34 , 180 , 185 , 186 ]. However, CfMV, SBMV, and SCPMV particles have been found predominantly in phloem [ 179 , 187 , 188 , 189 ].…”

“…We have been unable to observe PRV particles in phloem cells, but the location of PRV particles in xylem cells IS certain. Virus particles have seldom been detected in the xylem of other plants (CHAMBERS and FRANCKI 1966, Russo, MARTELLI and QUACQUARELLI 1967, ESAU 1968, PALIWAL 1970, LOMBARDO, SIMONETTA and BASSI 1971, but alterations of the xylem elements were never observed. It seems that, in the case of PRV infection, the cell wall of the xylem cells can not differentiate regularly and/or is dissolved in fibrillar material.…”

“…Since the isometric particles observed in ultrathin sections of infected peanut leaves were similar in morphology and size to the PRV virions seen in crude extracts and purified preparations (BENIGNO and FAVALI-HEDAYAI 1976), we concluded that they were PRV virions. As regards the modifications observed in the cellular organelles, some of them (rupture of the tonoplast, vacuolation of cytoplasm, lobated nuclei and light inclusions bodies probably lipid droplets) are found commonly in other virus infections and represent a host response to virus (GEROLA, BASSI andBELLI 1965, LOMBARDO, SIMONETTA andBASSI 1971).…”
