An Ultraviolet−Raman Spectroscopic Investigation of Magnesium Chloride−Ethanol Solids with a 0.47 to 6 Molar Ratio of C2H5OH to MgCl2

Abstract: MgCl 2 and C 2 H 5 OH form complexes over a wide range of C 2 H 5 OH to MgCl 2 molar ratios. MgCl 2 (C 2 H 5 OH) x adducts prepared over a wide composition range, x ) 0.47 to 6, have been studied by ultraviolet Raman spectroscopy. These studies indicate the breaking of the Mg-Cl bonds at x g 2. The Raman shift of the O-H stretch shifts in the 3230-3480 cm -1 range as the C 2 H 5 OH to MgCl 2 molar ratio is altered and thus, it can be used to monitor the MgCl 2 (C 2 H 5 OH) x composition. It is suggested that t… Show more

“…As described in the experimental section, this was carried out by exposing the film to ethanol vapor at 50-60 8C. MgCl 2 -ethanol solids obtained using different molar ratios of C 2 H 5 OH to MgCl 2 have been studied by means of Raman spectroscopy by Tewell et al [22] The Ostwald ripening process resulted in large changes in crystallite size and morphology. AFM images of the crystallites obtained are shown in Figure 2, which reveal the presence of relatively large, micrometer-sized crystallites, with variations in both size and height.…”

“…The irradiation power was calibrated to 15.0 mW cm ±2 using an OAI Model 354 exposure monitor (Milpitas, CA) with a 260 nm probe head. The emission spectrum of the exposed light was recorded using a UV±Raman spectrometer [32].…”

“…For comparison, crystalline MgCl 2 shows an intense distinctive vibrational mode around 240 cm À1 , which has been assigned to the A 1g breathing mode of the MgCl 6 octahedra in the lattice.
