An update on equine post‐operative ileus: Definitions, pathophysiology and management

Abstract: Post-operative ileus (POI) is a serious condition which any horse undergoing abdominal surgery is at risk of developing, leading to increased hospitalisation time and resulting costs. Advances in the understanding of the development of equine POI are mainly based on human and rodent literature, where manipulation-induced inflammation has been identified as a trigger, with activation of resident muscularis externa macrophages playing a crucial role in the pathophysiology. Despite many pharmacological trials in … Show more

“…Post‐operative reflux most commonly began 12–24 h after surgery, however in most horses there was no discernible increase in [SAA] response until day 2. Intestinal inflammation has been considered to play a role in development of post‐operative ileus/reflux , but the absence of a marked increased [SAA] at the time of development of reflux in this study does not support the presence of an immediate systemic response to the proposed inflammation and is more likely a delayed response. Transmural inflammation has been documented in manipulated segments of equine small intestine , in segments distant to sites of tissue handling and in segments proximal to naturally occurring strangulations , and such inflammatory responses may be partly responsible for the acute‐phase response identified in the current study.…”

“…A palavra íleo deriva do Grego e significa "torcendo".
