Phototrophic microorganisms can be found in biofilms at entrances to caves where they have access to sufficient sunlight, water and nutrients; however, they can also be found inside caves, where they are carried by animals and people, and can proliferate in the presence of artificial light. Although the genus Humidophila includes some well-known cosmopolitan species, further exploration of its rare, insufficiently investigated representatives in different geographical areas and unusual habitats is necessary. Caves remain unknown, little-explored habitats, and many species currently known to science were recorded for the first time. This study aimed to report species belonging to the genus Humidophila that were identified in 19 caves in Serbia. A total of ten species of this genus were recorded and some of them are documented for the first time in Serbia. The most abundant species were H. contenta (found in 16 caves), H. paracontenta, and H. aerophila (found in 13 caves), whereas H. pyrenaica was identified in only one cave. The rare species, H. brekkaensoides and H. vidalii, were also documented and described, but with different dimensions from those provided in current identification keys. The development and improvement of the monitoring system of rivers according to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) is essential for all European states because assigning a wrong ecological status class (misclassification) to a water body can have significant economic consequences. In order to point out some of the key issues of WFD implementation in Serbia, we conducted a one-year study of the composition and abundance of diatoms in the phytobenthos in two streams, the Lasovačka and Lenovačka, in eastern Serbia. The physicochemical quality elements were also used in the assessment of their ecological status. The diatom community exhibited a higher species richness in the Lasovačka (88 taxa) than in the Lenovačka stream (63 taxa). Such a detailed study enabled us to record some of the rare taxa, e.g. Caloneis budensis in the Lasovačka, which was the first finding of this species in Serbia. The Lasovačka and Lenovačka streams were downgraded to moderate and poor ecological status, respectively, because of the high nitrogen load. Since the monitoring results based on the diatom indices resulted in the assignment of two streams to a good ecological status, the possible reason for the mismatch between the biological and physicochemical quality elements could be due to the lack of analysis of benthic invertebrate fauna or the application of diatom indices that are insufficiently sensitive to the specific environmental pressure. The results of this study show that conducting a comprehensive ecological investigation of rivers within the framework of the WFD in Serbia is urgently needed.

A comparative Study of Diatom Flora of the Taleghan River in Iran with Other Studies Around the World

It is important to compare the flora of different parts of the world which have the various environmental condition. The flora of Taleghan dam and River was identified from November 2017 to October 2018 and the result is compared with 15 regions of recent studies in different continents. The flora of Africa with 66 percent common taxa was the highest similar to our study. Based on the comparison the Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Compère, Navicula cryptotenella Lange-Bertalot Gomphonema acuminatum Ehrenberg and Nitzschia palea (Kützing) W Smith was the cosmopolitan species and Achnanthidium eutrophilum (Lange-Bertalot) Lange-Bertalot, Frustulia tugelae Cholnoky, Nitzschia acula (Kützing) Kützing in Rabenhors, and some other species were rare taxon. 45 out of 203 diagnosed species and genus Seminavis D.G.Mann is new record for diatoms flora of Iran. Also, the species Cymbella pernodensis Maillard, Cymbella novazeelandiana Krammer and Achnanthidium druartii Rimet & Couté were new records for Asia.
