A case of the so-called blue rubber-bleb nevus, which appeared in old age, with an anorectal bleeding is presented. Thrombocytopenia and hypercalcemia present in the case, are discussed and the pertinent literature is reviewed. The curious coincidence of 2 cystic squamous cell carcinoma in the groin is discussed, in view of the reported coincidence of other tumours. We propose to call this entity ‘multiple skin and gastro-intestinal haemangiomata’. This because the name describes the main features of this syndrome; moreover, it would call attention to the possibility of gastro-intestinal haemangiomata in such cases.

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome, an uncommon condition, is manifested by gastrointestinal and skin hemangiomas and gastrointestinal hemorrhage causing anemia. The authors report a unique case of the syndrome in association with a congenital cardiac malformation. A 26-year-old woman presented with irondeficiency anemia after the birth of her first child. She had a history of skin and gastrointestinal hemangiomas and tetralogy of Fallot. Endoscopy revealed multiple new intestinal hemangiomas, which were removed through enterotomies with resolution of the anemia. Iron therapy was prescribed, and her condition was stable at follow-up 5 years later.

A wide range of vascular anomalies occurs in the gastrointestinal tract, the most specific being those of hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia. However, single gastric angiodysplasias are being recognised with increased frequency as an important cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. We present a case of gastric arteriovenous malformation, and review the general features that differentiate single gastric angiodysplasia from other vascular anomalies and syndromes associated with gastric vascular disease. Further reports are needed to confirm that gastric angiodysplasias constitue a unique and separate entity. If so, successful management should be obtained by resection of the whole angiodysplastic area.
